Full-Stack designing and strategizing for the future of online education

Problem

A successful bootstrap (ENGETO) wanted to improve its operations and scale-up. Its product and strategy was not prepared for scaling up, and is had multiple reasons:

  • The platform for creating and managing the learning materials was suboptiomal and needed to be built again (but there was enough data for building it right).
  • The learning path for students was not optimal. The lecturers are generally experts in their domain, but not experts in teaching and creating learning path that is easy to digest by students.
  • Teaching took place in pre-scheduled webinars (3 hours long) and offline materials. This form was costly and inefficient.
  • Initial product was not sustainable, but Engeto was ready to fix it - and was also open to completely change its methodics for teaching.

Process

  • I performed and initiated a set of wide range research.
  • I have redesigned the LMS and proposed multiple strategies to simplify the operations. Thus, allowing more time and resources to be directed towards future development.
  • I spent significant time researching topics related to education and engagement in education, focusing primarily on the methodology of education that are successful in raising engagement of students, the inner motivation of students, and its application into study-flow.
  • I strongly collaborated with CEO, partially taking the role of a product manager. Together we developed and tested new strategies and approaches for improvement.

Outcomes

  • A new platform for creating and managing materials for students to learn from. The same platform is able to manage ongoing courses while adding a layer of managing processes related to ongoing courses (students are doing homework assignments that need to be evaluated, etc).
  • A new platform for students that holds all of the information they need in the various phases of the course they are studying. The design adjusts to their flow through the course (which is in average 3 months long, consists of 36 hours in webinars and tens of hours learning from materials created by ENGETO).
  • Multiple concepts for the future of learning online, including pre-recorded video classes and a tool for making homework assignments and exercises in the browser (instead of in external tools, needing to use GIT too early in the flow, etc).
  • Initiating several new workflows, like the inclusion of a learning designer into the process of creating and/or improving the learning materials and the learning itself. Initiating the adoption of a methodical approach when creating basically anything that student sees.
  • A free course that’s designed for acquisition.
  • New design workflow, the organisation became more design-centric.

Result

  • I significantly contributed to the way students are learning, including how materials for studying are being made, managed, and consumed. I added a few new aspects to the learning structure, improving the engagement of students. Thus improving success.
  • 100% of both parts of the platform (for admins and lecturers, and for students) were redesigned. In result, both students and lecturers are reporting significant improvement in their work/study.
  • The quality of learning and student engagement have risen, with more improvement yet to come, as the product improvements will need more time to be properly implemented and adopted.
  • ENGETO is now on its path of evolving from a small local bootstrap, into an international, scalable and highly innovative online learning platform.
